the wage gap is like this |—————————————————————————————————-|
and it needs to be like this |———|
The wage gap needs to stop being measured as an average for all fulltime incomes from males contrasted with females in all age groups and instead be measured per occupation and by age group because it’s inaccurate as fuck especially given the workplace and life choices made by both sexes.
For all we know, it may already be like this |———| or even this || in most places already but |—————————————————————| in select areas/industries that create actual wage disparity. Seeing and focusing on that will allow us to see WHERE improvement needs to be made and put the fire under those business owners asses to make a difference in their pay structure so this |———| can be this ||.
Considering how taking maternal leave will allow male colleagues to continue moving up the corporate ladder while females on maternal leave will pick up where they left off, leaving them a year or more behind in terms of raises and promotions, this should be addressed and analyzed to see what can be done with that. Plus I know people get fired for being pregnant even still and women should be aware of how they appeal those decisions with every ounce of their lawful ability, because those same people I know just take their firing like it can’t be helped.
However, I’d like you consider industries like resources, where there is sizeable wage gap BY AVERAGES among male and females. Though if you look at that in a more detailed fashion, you will see that the majority of the female workers there are in administration and desk work, while most of the males in the industry are in the higher paying field work extracting said resources. If you are in a mine or out in a -40C degree environment extracting tar sands oil, chances are 95%+ of those workers are male by simple virtue of how men will tend to seek the higher paying high physical risk work than women. I worked in a high wage, heavy machinery factory for three years ($18 per hour) that had fatal accidents every year, and outside of one 19 year old woman who quit a week after orientation, only men applied for the labour there. However, the office attached to the worksite was staffed almost entirely by women and office workers usually made $12 an hour as their work was more reliant on computer use and taking phonecalls. There was no visible workplace discrimination on site because it was a unionized job with equal representation in the union leadership. However, when averaging out those incomes, you will see a wage gap and looking at that and not understanding the workplace, you can easily assume that women are grossly discriminated against.
Don’t take me wrong, there IS a wage gap, it’s just not as significant as it’s made out to be in reactionary activist circles, and alot of that comes from shit like the glass ceiling that is very real as most people on the top of the hierarchy in industries tend to be older, grayer, usually more bigoted minded individuals who would prefer to keep the top an old boys club.
In most if not all studies there is always an unexplainable percentage of the gap that rounds to about 5-7% of the total gap itself, and in that is where most people attribute the discrimination, but discrimination is hard to measure so it appears as an unexplainable percentage in the whole wage gap.
So in conclusion, the wage gap is less of |—————————————————————————————————-|
and more of
It’s just politically convenient to point at fixing the
to get votes, attention for your cause, etc etc.
And that’s shitty because by looking at the wage gap as a whole and not breaking it down and seeing the complexities that create the appearance of the whole “gap,” we will ultimately ignore what problems remain and by ignorance permit the workplace discrimination simply by allowing it hide in plain sight.

Sweden attempts to banish gender.
Promotes New Gender-Neutral Pronoun: Hen
Eliminating he, she, him her from their language in exchange for the gender neutral pronoun “hen”.
Earlier this month, the movement for gender neutrality reached a milestone: Just days after International Women’s Day a new pronoun, hen (pronounced like the bird in English), was added to the online version of the country’s National Encyclopedia. The entry defines hen as a “proposed gender-neutral personal pronoun instead of he [han in Swedish] and she [hon].”The National Encyclopedia announcement came amid a heated debate about gender neutrality that has been raging in Swedish newspaper columns and TV studios and on parenting blogs and feminist websites. It was sparked by the publication of Sweden’s first ever gender-neutral children’s book, Kivi och Monsterhund (Kivi and Monsterdog). It tells the story of Kivi, who wants a dog for “hen’s” birthday. The male author, Jesper Lundqvist, introduces several gender-neutral words in the book. For instance the words mammor and pappor (moms and dads) are replaced with mappor and pammor.
Some clothing stores are eliminating the male and female clothing sections.
Children’s clothing is no longer being designed for male or females but instead in a gender neutral style. For example, the picture above is from a children’s toy magazine that recently decided to switch things around, showing a boy in a Spider-Man costume pushing a pink pram, while a girl in denim rides a yellow tractor.
Activists are encouraging parents to give their children new unisex names, and official documents will not identify a gender for the child until it is old enough to select the one it wants.
Sports are required to merge all gender based leagues into one unisex league.
Gender neutral bathrooms (of course), starting with all public school facilities.
Several preschools have banished references to pupils’ genders, instead referring to children as “buddies.” So, a teacher would say “good morning, buddies,” rather than “boys and girls.”
They believe this fulfills the national curriculum’s guideline that preschools should “counteract traditional gender patterns and gender roles” and give girls and boys “the same opportunities to test and develop abilities and interests without being limited by stereotypical gender roles.”
But not everyone is keen on this political meddling with the Swedish language. In a recent interview for Vice magazine, Jan Guillou, one of Sweden’s most well-known authors, referred to proponents of hen as “feminist activists who want to destroy our language.” Other critics believe it can be psychologically and socially damaging, especially for children. Elise Claeson, a columnist and a former equality expert at the Swedish Confederation of Professions, has said that young children can become confused by the suggestion that there is a third, “in-between” gender at a time when their brains and bodies are developing. Adults should not interrupt children’s discovery of their gender and sexuality, argues Claeson. She told the Swedish daily, Dagens Nyheter, that “gender ideologues” have managed to change the curriculum to establish that schools should actively counter gender roles.
Ironically, in the effort to free Swedish children from so-called normative behavior, gender-neutral proponents are also subjecting them to a whole set of new rules and new norms as certain forms of play become taboo, language becomes regulated, and children’s interactions and attitudes are closely observed by teachers. One Swedish school got rid of its toy cars because boys “gender-coded” them and ascribed the cars higher status than other toys. Another preschool removed “free playtime” from its schedule because, as a pedagogue at the school put it, when children play freely “stereotypical gender patterns are born and cemented. In free play there is hierarchy, exclusion, and the seed to bullying.” And so every detail of children’s interactions gets micromanaged by concerned adults, who end up problematizing minute aspects of children’s lives, from how they form friendships to what games they play and what songs they sing.
Dat last paragraph sounds pretty ominous. Sucks to be a kid in Sweden.
Berkeley should be a bit proud. It’s sad that 10 individuals got so much attention but I think a very important discussion was had. Bravo.
so this made my day today::
Hundreds of students dressed in black holding signs that read “UC us now?” & “Don’t UC us?”, joined hands in protest against the “Increase Diversity Bake Sale”.
Do UC us?
I see you Berkeley folks of color and folks in solidarity! UNITED WE WILL ALWAYS STAND!
“It is our duty to fight for our freedom! It is our duty to win! We must love and protect each other! We have nothing to lose but our chains!”
This is so amazing.
And this is what I love to see.
this is beautiful.
I know everyone freaks out when I say I’m anti-affirmative action, but I think it’s important to mention that this protest implies that these students of color would otherwise not have made the admissions cut to UC Berkeley. Are you kidding me? UC Berkeley? As if without affirmative action suddenly no students of color would be admitted? They absolutely pride themselves on their diversity regardless, like every other ranked institution.
“At the University of Michigan, being black automatically counts “20 points” toward admission – considerably more than any academic or cognitive achievement (a perfect SAT score, for example, only counts “12 points”).” http://www.lewrockwell.com/yates/yates70.html
Okay, you frequently reblog my shit and say dumb, dumb things that I just can’t be bothered to address. But did you seriously use Lew Rockwell as a source? The Lew Rockwell who is for DADT and DoMA? The same Lew Rockwell who wrote Ron Paul’s white supremacist newsletters? Yeah, I trust his word on how affirmative action works.
If you’re against affirmative action, you’re either racist or not actually paying attention to what is really going on in this country. Black unemployment is double white unemployment. White people get a disproportionate percentage of scholarships and grants, and are admitted at a much higher rate than minority students. White candidates are twice as likely to get hired than their equally-qualified black counterparts, even when the white candidate is a convicted felon. Affirmative action hasn’t done nearly enough.
Disregarding the whole argument above here:
I’m actually more or less thrilled at the cleverness of the bake sale (It made a pretty succinct point in an relate-able manner) and the engagement of free speech from both sides.
